//the[neo-nerd]
let's face it...nerd is the hottest trend to smack us in the faces...and for once, i'm part of a trend, i've been part of the trend my whole life, and i don't mind it...because it's the anti-trend. from signing up on friendster.com, to daily blogging, to the ever growing popularity of coldplay...the rise of the neo-nerd is taking over.
it isn't enough to just say nerd...but, it's the neo-nerd. the neo-nerd is no longer the loser. neo-nerd isn't the pocket protecter wearing, greasy-haired, pimple skinned dweeb who lives in his own world...the neo-nerd is something else...the neo-nerd is that part of us that thrives off of comic books, video games, and music that means something. the neo-nerd is now sociable and social. dweebs still exist. dweebs are not the neo-nerd. that kid who is going to be on the first episode of the new season of mtv's made is not a neo-nerd...he's just a dweeb.
nerd has taken over fashion through glasses, trucker caps, and guys wearing shirts a couple sizes too small. it has invaded television with the inclusion of fred armisen and tina fey in the casts of saturday night live, lisa simpson's nerdiness was cool before it could be considered mainstream cool, and everyone loves stephen colbert and mo rocca. if you think about it, the very premise of the wb's smallville is very nerdy: superman (a comic book character, nonetheless) in his adolescent years, and let's make him part of the journalism team--and it's a hit. just look at the lead singers of a lot of the bands out right now: andrew mcmahon from something corporate; chris martin from coldplay (who, i might add, is sleeping with gwenyth paltrow); thom yorke from radiohead; or hip-hoppers common (from the coca-cola commercial with mya), pharrell williams (frontman for the group n.e.r.d.), or mos def. my final shred of evidence: vh1 is finally cool...nerd culture is taking over.
go get your boba-filled drinks, listen to your neo-pop and neo-emo-punk, wrap a tie around your neck for no good reason at all, smash the buttons on your ps2 controller, log-on to friendster.com and blog about it...you've got some nerd in you...and you like it.
the neo-nerd is simple and complex at the same time.
the neo-nerd is the new sexy.
for once, i'm temporarily cool.

[restaurant : hooters]
that's a great american establishment if there ever was one. being nineteen-years-old and very single, i really don't think that there is another place to obtain great hot wings...that's right, there is no other place for the single american male to get hot wings. i've only got three more opportunities to get 20% off of my orders too...since hooters has been around for 20 years, they're taking 20% off the bill every 20th of each month this year...so...gotta do that. i'm single, and it'll be that way for awhile...until proven otherwise, this is my new favorite restaurant.
[television show : the oc]
okay...i'm an oc kid myself...but there's something about teen-dramas mixed with the uber-sleaziness of fox that makes me think oooohh. the fact is, it might be a little cheesy...and my life in orange county, california does not quite parallel that of the characters in the show...but the characters come fairly close. my favorite character, and probably yours too, is seth...funny guy, the underdog...there's some sort of sleazy and cheezy charm to this show that just gets you hooked.
queer eye for the straight guy comes in a very close second.
[show you're not watching : style court]
this show is incredibly genius. it's a guilty pleasure. it's a reason why mig needs to get cable soon. here's the premise: civilians play fashion police and put their possibly fashion-challenged friends on trial in front of a celebrity jury of three, and a fashion judge (who has studied law, fashion, and is a hip-hop afficionado). it's just a funny show, and it's interesting to see the makeovers.
the look for less is the runner up.
[magazine : gq]
the fact that johnny knoxville is on the cover of the september 2003 issue lets you know something: the times have changed. knoxville actully looks pretty good on the cover, it's not the knoxville you're used to seeing...he's a little more clean cut with some minute knoxvillian touches (picture suit jacket and a hilfiger dress shirt mixed with a vintage tie, wristband, soiled dickies and knoxville belt buckle). the corresponding article is a wonderful profile of the man we have known to be the supreme jack-ass (how he and a staff writer spend a night and $1,000 in atlantic city). there are new features in the magazine that reflect the americanness of pop culture and what is important to young men 18-35 in america (i.e. the verge, manual/how to...). it still maintains a fashion forward front for men, and is vintage clothing friendly. (also, if you read the september issue, you'll see what inspired my neo-nerd section)
now if only they made a gq for guys who shop on a budget...
//punk.goes[mainstream]
i'm watching television today...and i see an advertisement for the quintessential teeny-bopper-parental-bonding-film soundtrack (freaky friday)...and i can't help but notice the line-up of bands: the donnas (whose music usually consists of trying to get a guy into the backseat, or getting drunk), lillix...but then i see american hi-fi (who i helped boo at chain reaction) and bowling for soup...and i'm thinking: wow, punk...well, pop-punk is going mainstream. seems odd...
//boba
i could use some boba today. and i'd like to solidify some plans for my empty friday night. i'm out y'all.
please scroll down for an important issue concerning amina lawal's execution.
